The threat of an epidemic of Creutzfeldt Jacob Disease (CJD) in the human
population as a result of exposure to Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy
(BSE) or 'Mad Cow Disease' has caused massive concern accross the world.
The consequences to agriculture, animal health, and human health are still
being felt.
These diseases are unique in that they are believed to be transmitted by a
protein - termed the prion protein. How this happens and what might be done
to treat these devastating diseases are vital questions. Central to our understanding of such diseases is the science of
Neuropathology. The International Society of Neuropathologists will be holding its next
International Congress in Birmingham during September 2000 during which
there will be a special scientific symposium on Prion Diseases in the 21st century.
The leading research workers in this area will be gathering in Birmingham
to share their knowledge of these diseases. The latest observations on new
variant CJD will be presented together with insights from basic medical
sciences into how these diseases occur and what we might consider for
treatments in the future.

International Meeting Of
Neuropathologists
Press Release December 1999
Diseases of the
brain are amongst the most terrible of all afflictions. Dementia, such as
Alzheimer's disease is set to be the greatest health problem ever to face present
generations. Mad cow disease and the fear that this may spread to
humans has had a massive economic and social impact in the last few
years.
Central to our understanding of such diseases is the science of
Neuropathology. The International Society of Neuropathologists will be holding its next
International Congress in Birmingham during September 2000 at which the
latest developments in diseases of the brain will be presented.
Neuropathologists rank amongst the most influential opinion formers in
neurosciences and the International Congress of Neuropathology is recognised as a
key focus for information interchange.
Neuropathology is a cutting-edge area of
clinical neuroscience and the conference attracts
clinical neurologists, neurosurgeons, as well as neuropathologists.
A feature of the 2000 meeting will be lectures given by
internationally recognised workers on topics of the greatest biological
and medical significance.
- Alzheimer's disease
- Parkinson's disease
- Creutzfeldt Jakob disease
- Multiple sclerosis
- Stroke
- Head injury
- Brain tumours
